It’s impossible to say how far the rain influences our popular culture. Gene Kelly sang in it, BJ Thomas complained about it whilst Paul Newman pulled stunts on a bicycle, and a Goth-mocking Garbage were only too happy in it. I personally didn’t understand the inner city miserablism of Oasis and The Smiths until I had experienced Manchester’s downpours at first hand.
